Physical Education

At St Anselm’s Catholic Primary school we believe that Physical Education develops pupils’ physical competence and confidence. We provide a minimum of 2 hours of high quality physical activity every week during the school day as well as further extra-curricular activities.

The government funding for P.E has allowed us to enhance specialist provision to help deliver high quality Physical Education. The pupils aquire and develop skills in a wide range of sports including football, netball, cricket, tennis, tag rugby, hockey, rounders, volleyball, gymnastics and table tennis. The children are also taught to develop their skills in dance which culminates in a whole school dance during theme week. In addition, Years 4 and 6 have swimming lessons for one term per year at a local secondary school.

In lessons the unit focus is often on a single sporting discipline while others take a multi-skilled approach and each unit is completed with an intra-school competition with all children involved in their house colours. Here the children learn how to compete and develop good sportsmanship whilst enjoying taking part.

The school also promotes a healthy lifestyle to all pupils and encourages children to eat healthily. At the beginning of PE sessions Years 4, 5 and 6 make and drink smoothies as part of their healthy lifestyle.

The school takes advantage of its location and regularly uses Tooting Bec Common for lessons and competitions. We are also using government funding to hire Tooting Bec athletics track each Friday afternoon for Years 5 and 6 where the children take part in the UK athletics award scheme.  Our whole school sports day is also held here at the end of the summer term.  Pupils in Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 4 will also have the opportunity to take part in tennis lessons at the courts at Tooting Bec common during the summer term.

The pupils in Years 5 and 6 also take part in cycling awareness training where they develop the confidence and skills for cycling on the road.

The school offers a range of after school sport clubs including football, hockey, netball, dance and cricket. The school also has excellent links with others schools in the local area and often compete in matches on our home ground and away.  We also have links with outside sporting clubs in the local area such as Balham Blazers, Battersea Ironsides Rugby Club, Spencer Cricket Club and the Tooting Bec Tennis School.
