St Anselm's Catholic Primary School

The Early Years Foundation Stage

Reception Class

Our focus in the early years is to teach children to become independent and confident learners.  We focus  on an integrated day which provides interesting, motivating and challenging tasks for the children, both within the set up of the indoor and outdoor environments, and through guided tasks and whole class teaching.  Learning is child-centred, and it focusses on a particular topic each half term.

Through a detailed and well-designed curriculum, and skilful teaching and questioning from our Early Years staff, the children develop as independent thinkers and learners. Our aim is to build on their natural curiosity and to help them to deal with every day situations that arise, teaching them how to collaborate, share, listen, express themselves and interact with both adults and their peers.

We follow the EYFS curriculum which covers the following areas:

Prime Areas of Learning

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Physical development
  • Communication and language
