St Anselm's Catholic Primary School

RE

Pupils are taught to value themselves, and others, and to understand that they all are made in the image and likeness of God. Children are reflective and aware of their actions on others because they are able to understand and apply the teachings of the gospel.

The school uses ‘The Way, the Truth and the Life’ as their primary RE scheme. The scheme, however, acts only as a starting point to our teaching of RE and teachers  take the learning much deeper to allow for a greater level of learning and understanding. We focus on helping the children to think theologically, ethically and spiritually. The teaching of other faiths is also an important aspect of our RE curriculum.

Our RE teaching encourages our children to discover, to analyse and to investigate scripture allowing them to understand the messages and to make links with other scripture as well as their own lives.

Pupils engage fully in the prayer life of the school. They are both reverent and respectful. The school uses the structure of a simple liturgy for all collective worship – Gather, the Word, Reflect and Going Forth.

Our School Prayer

Our prayer was written by our Pupil Chaplains and is based on our Mission Statement

Dear Lord

When we work and when we play, we know that you are there beside us.

We know that you love us always; may we follow your example by serving everyone in our community.

Help us to be your true disciples by showing respect, kindness and forgiveness.

We ask that you guide us every day as we endeavour to challenge ourselves to do our best.

Amen

Pupil Chaplaincy

Each year we appoint a group of Chaplains from Years 4, 5 and 6 who work alongside the Headteacher to develop the Catholic life of the school.  Examples of their work includes:

  • Running the rosary club during October
  • Leading the Stations of the Cross for the school community
  • Writing the school prayer
  • Supporting within the parish by attending 'Soup and Sandwich'
  • Running fund raising projects
  • Visiting a local Muslim school to talk to the pupils about being a Catholic

 Our Priests

Fr Will and Fr Peter drop into school regularly to support with the teaching of RE and to offer the children time to talk about their faith

Trips and visits

Our curriculum is enhanced with trips and visits. Examples of these are:

  • An overnight visit to Aylesford Priory for children in Year 4
  • A visit to places of worship from other faiths
  • An assembly about Islam led by a Muslim teacher
  • Assemblies led by charities such as CAFOD, Centrepoint and Aid to the Church in Need

Our own church, St Anselm's Church, is also visited regularly for Mass, Confession, Benediction and to support the RE curriculum
